Ok so what is outside your comfort zone? Well there are lots of things, however, to start let’s look at what it’s like being inside your comfort zone.

For me, being inside my comfort is like being inside a coffin only you are not dead. The coffin is comfortable although you soon get sick of lying on your back. And basically you don’t do anything. You don’t grow, you don’t have any success, you don’t do anything new. And if you are not growing you are dying. Is that how you want to live? Maybe it is. A lot of people like living in their coffin. Problem is they live all their life in a coffin, achieve nothing of substance and then die and are put in another coffin for eternity!

How do you break free? There is a whole new world out there waiting for you to take it on.

Here is a list of just 5 things you could do to start breaking free of your coffin –

  1. Do something rash like taking a trip overseas to a place you have never been.
  2. Stop seeing a friend who is always negative to be around
  3. Start learning a new language
  4. Start learning an instrument
  5. Go somewhere new and make a video out of it with you as the commentator

Watch the video first –

Now lets go through these one by one.

Take an Overseas Trip

get out of your comfort zoneWhere is a place you would love to go that you have never been before? Take stock of your finances, apply for some holiday leave and book your trip. Maybe the Camino De Santiago Pilgrims Walk in Spain or an adventure in New Zealand? Whether you go alone or with friends or family it doesn’t matter. just do it. Stop making excuses and get it done.

Travelling is the best education. Seeing and immersing yourself in a different culture will open your eyes and make you realise how much the world has to offer. Do it now. Get out of your comfort zone!

Dump a Negative Friend

Jim Rohn once said ‘You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.’

How many of your friends are negative in your top 5? How many are jealous of your success or put you down behind your back. Quite often this can be close family. Your family are the first ones to criticise you for wanting to leave home and start a business or take off for a trip overseas.

Work out your 5 closest friends and family and then decide which one has the most negative impact on your life. Then stop seeing them. Sometimes with family that is hard but just stop seeing them as much and then slowly over time see them even less. Watch your life get brighter and better. get out of your comfort zone now!

Learn a New Language

get out of your comfort zonetvI started learning Spanish a year ago. I have stopped on and off but I am now back to learning it. Learning a new language can be tough but lots of fun to. And it definitely gets you out of your comfort zone.

There are so many free apps now that you can use to learn a language. I use Duolingo and think its great. It is totally free and is very easy to use. There are a few others but for me this one is best. When you go for your overseas trip it will be great to know a few common phrases in the local lingo. Get out of your comfort zone now!

Learn to Play an Instrument

I started learning the guitar more than 10 years ago. And here is a confession. I still can’t play it! I learned for about 6 months and then gave up. Took it back up for a few weeks about 5 years ago. Gave up again and did the same thing 3 years ago.

I still have my guitar and plan on getting out again in 2018. I may never learn it properly but it’s something I want to do but obviously the passion is not strong enough. Still, I had to get out of my comfort zone when I first started and go buy my guitar and start lessons.

Don’t be like me when it comes to learning an instrument. If it’s something you love get out of your comfort zone now and do it!

Make a Selfie Video

get out of your comfort zonetvI can’t remember when I made my first selfie video AND published it on social media! I think I was living in Cairns and had joined an online group of like minded souls who were getting out of their comfort zones by doing all sorts of crazy stuff.

It was either out on my kayak in the middle of the coral ocean off Trinity Beach in Far North Queensland, Australia or it was at Rusty’s Markets in Cairns, also in FNQ. Whatever it was it was liberating. I have loved doing it ever since. There is no bigger challenge I think than getting in front of your phones camera and talking, especially when you have a crowd of people around you who don’t know you. Here is your challenge. make a selfie video and post it on Facebook or Instagram. Go on, I dare you!

  1. Great post! My personal favorite is about dumping a negative friend, as it can be very scary, but sometimes it has to be done for the best. I’ve had friends that just want to “chill” and drink all night, but I know there is so much out there in the world, like building real friendships and getting to know your real friends! Need to follow your dreams! 🙂

    1. Hi jarod,

yes definitely watch who you hang with. So many negative people out there. Finding positive role models and mentors will head us off in the direction of success and passion. Thanks for stopping by,

  2. Hi Kevin, this article and your entire site have inspired even more to get out there and explore the world. I’d love to visit Asia for a few months, but are concerned about our finances. IN order to leave for a couple of months, both I and my wife would have to leave our jobs and hope they accept us back later. It’s a risk, but I think it’s worth it.
So, I guess I will need to get out of my comfort zone and take the risk anyway.

    1. Hi Stefan,

Definitely worth doing. Travel is my greatest passion now. I highly recommend it. Maybe you could find a side hustle to bring in a few dollars while you travel. Some kind of online thing would be good. Lots of little businesses or online jobs you could do. But just do the travel for sure. get to New Zealand sometime too!
